Help Needed to save St Mary's Church, Avenbury |

This well loved church was built in a bend of the beautiful River Frome just south of Bromyard on a site known to have had a church prior to 1100 AD.
The church was used until 1931 when the last vicar died, the church then closed. It gradually fell into decay, was sold into private ownership in the 1970s and is now being resold with many covenants that mean it must remain a disused church and graveyard. It cannot become housing.
St Mary's is exceptionally highly thought of and is the subject of a public appeal initiated by Avenbury Parish Council and now independently run by the Avenbury Church Project.
|
The church is the subject of a book by well known local history writer, Phyllis Williams, with photographs by the late Howardd Painter, for more information click here
We urgently need £49,000 to buy the site for the community, tidy up the graveyard, remove wild undergrowth and set up a St Marys website. Then start the next phase of a) site works, b) stabilise the ruins, c) improve public accessibility, d) provide information boards, etc., e) launch a further appeal to raise funds to pay for these works and future maintenance.
The eight founder members need your help to achieve all this.
Contact us if you would like to:
- Become a friend of St Marys, or
- Set up a direct debit
Please send your cheques payable to the Avenbury Church Project to this address (receipts will be supplied):
School House, Munderfield, Avenbury, Bromyard, HR7 4JX
Thank you

The smell of
cooking and baking pervaded the whole school as we prepared to raise money for
the Children in Need appeal. The children had already completed pictures of
Pudseys Birthday Party for the competition organized by HSBC Bank (Bromyard)
£69 was raised from this in entry fees. Pictures can now be viewed in the bank
and we are waiting for the results of the judging. Meanwhile back at school all
the cakes hundreds of them all shapes and sizes including Pudsey Bear
biscuits were sold in school on Children in Need Friday.
A total of £ 483.20 was raised including the raffle for two Pudsey Bears
and two cakes. One of the cakes in the shape of this busy bear was raffled
later that evening and £80 was made. Well done and thanks to everyone for their
help, support and cooking!

Pencombe School 'Adopts A Farmer'
At Pencombe C of E Primary school we have lots of
parents who are farmers or who have jobs and lives with a farming connection.
Now we also have one very special adopted farmer Mr Phil Hope from Mill Farm
whose 3 daughters attend Pencombe school.
The reason for adopting a farmer is
because the academic year 2007/08 has been designated as The Year of Food and
Farming.
