In Bromyard we have no need to be concerned about horsemeat contamination... that is if we have the good sense to buy from our excellent local butchers; Mervyn Harris, Gladwin's or Legge's.
Thing that worries me about this horsemeat issue is that they tested for and found horse dna but what about the things they HAVEN'T tested for? Roadkill dna? Badger dna? Small African tribe dna? What else is in there?
So local and organic is for me every time, even if it does cost a bit more. You can always eat a bit less to keep prices the same.
I agree that a lot of organic food is expensive compared to other foods and I do wonder whether this is due to costs of production or just the retailers boosting their profits. However I certainly know that organic food is not covered in harmful chemicals, an apple may have about 17 different sprays on and even though we are told they are safe, they are not tested in conjucture with each other also how many time are we told a chemical is safe and a few years down the line we discover it to be harmful. Animals are rountinely given drugs such as antibiotics whether they need them or not and the overuse of these means diseases become more resistant. We were ill once after eating a non-organic lettuce and non-organic milk also upsets us, I have also known people who have died due to chemicals in modern day life. The big companies who many a fortune out of chemical production do not want us to become organic. I could write a book on reasons to eat organic.
Ros - agree with your sentiments, certainly shop local. However, do we know enough about organic food production and whether the extra costs are justified?
The horsemeat episode just shows how little we really know about the processed food constructed by large companies and sold in the supermarket chains who's only concern is their profit margins with little regard for the health of the public. Think of your health and that of your family - shop local and shop organic.
