U3A - University of the 3rd Age

For those of you reading this who have not, as yet, thought about joining U3A, read on. Bromyard's branch of U3A was set up in October 2011, and despite the word 'University' maybe conjuring up images that many want to keep firmly in the past, we are a very informal group of people who have either retired or are semi-retired, but who are too young in spirit to sit by our fires with our slippers warming beside us! Several groups have started, and some have gathered pace- philosophy, art appreciation and literature being three which are now thriving.

The idea behind each group is that everyone is involved and no-one is "teacher". One person may lead and have more knowledge than the others, but generally meetings are based round discussion and comment, rather than listening for a long period. Some of the groups have organised visits; Art Appreciation has visited The Ashmolean in Oxford, Twigworth in Gloucestershire, and the Barbour in Birmingham. The Places of Interest group recently went to Hidcote Gardens in the Cotswolds, and had a really enjoyable time together - and it didn't rain!

We are hoping that, with increased membership, we will be able to start more groups, and are always on the lookout for people with areas of expertise or talent that they could pass on to others who are interested. But you don't need to be expert at anything to join - just interested and keen.

In addition to the groups, we hold a monthly meeting to catch up on all that is going on within the groups, and to have a speaker or something for all members to join in. From September 2012, we are changing the day and time of this meeting, to the FIRST TUESDAY in the month at 2pm in the Public Hall. We would very much like you to come along and see what we are about- we are a very friendly bunch of people who would love to welcome some new potential members! If you would like any more information, do give one of the people below a ring.
