BROMYARD’S mayor has explained the decision to implement charges at the council’s Rowberry Street car park.
From April 1, drivers using the car park Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, will have free parking for the first hour, then pay 30p for up to two-hours, 50p for up to three-hours, 70p for up to four-hours and £4 for four-hours plus.
Councillor Jamie Jacobsen said the decision was taken to charge after the council found vehicles left for weeks on end in the car park, adding: "The purpose of buying the car park was to protect it and ensure it was used by people visiting the town and using the retail outlets and pubs and restaurants and also for residents to use it in the evening.
"Secondly, we needed some way of managing the car parking and bringing income in. At some stage the car park will have to be resurfaced. We thought it was unfair to ask the precept payers of Bromyard to contribute towards its upkeep. We have been very careful to ensure the charges are kept reasonable."
Year-long permits can also be purchased. For more information contact the town council on 01885 482825.
