SEASONED sausage-makers from Bromyard walked away with first prize in this year’s Herefordshire Sizzle Off competition. Legge’s of Bromyard, a family butchers in Tenbury Road, was crowned county champion for its speciality banger containing black-pudding, apple and herbs.
The entry, the brainchild of butchers Arthur Belimenko and Charles Muskin, was judged best in the speciality category at Hills of Ledbury last week.
Mr Belimenko said: “We do try our best to come up with something new and good so we’re really pleased with it.”
The achievement was made all the more remarkable by the flavoursome sausage not being Legge’s first choice.
“We wanted to enter a beef, horseradish and tomato one but we did not have any fresh horseradish,” added Mr Belimenko.
The competition is organised by Heart of England Fine Foods and Legge’s were expected to compete in the grand finale, in Birmingham, last night.
Owner Anthony Legge said: “We’re overjoyed. We’ve always known these were award winning sausages and this just puts the cherry on the cake for us.”
